SONOMA-MARIN FAIR NAMES THE READING OLYMPICS WINNERS


Hot 98.7 Although 23 classrooms started the competition, only 11 finished. The surviving Reading Olympians managed to make it through spring fever, STAR testing, and the end of the school year to complete their race to read the most books in two months in this competition sponsored by the Sonoma-Marin Fair. And the Olympians posted some numbers. Together they read 4,975 books.

Top individual readers included Eridian Hernandez-Vega, a third grader in Kevin Parsons' class at Gravenstein Elementary who read 280 books, third grader Mackenzie Kellen of Neil Cummins in Corte Madera who read 101 books and second grader Jessica Rivera in Lucretia Horn's second grade class at Bernard Eldredge School in Petaluma who read 110 books. Jamine Temple, a 7th Grader at Hillcrest School, read 188 books and homeschooler Emily Boyles read 114 books. Other noteworthy Olympians include first grader Spencer Reynolds of Tomales Elementary who read 83 books and second grader Marcos Sanchez, also of Tomales who read 86 books.

Classroom winners are as follows. Lucretia Horn's second grade class at Bernard Eldredge School swept the competition with 1,005 books read in the two month period. They claimed the gold for the second grade classes in Sonoma and Marin Counties. Kim Berger's second graders at Tomales Elementary took the silver with 698 books. Third place was Lindsay Frey's class at Austin Creek Elementary with 399 books.

First grade gold was taken by Sally Livesay's class at Tomales Elementary with 440 books. Fran Link's first graders took second for Riebli Elementary in Santa Rosa with 188. Kevin Parsons' second and third grade combination class took the gold for the third graders in Sonoma and Marin Counties with 857 books read, the second highest number posted overall.

In Tiburon, Bel Aire School fourth graders claimed the gold with 234 books. Petaluma High School 9th graders claimed the gold, silver, and bronze for Robert Liroff's 1st, 5th, and 0 periods. Liroff's 11th graders took the gold as well.

Winners received complimentary tickets to the Sonoma-Marin Fair at the Petaluma Fairgrounds scheduled for June 21 through 25, along with certificates of recognition. The Reading Olympics competition was also sponsored by the Marin County Office of Education, the Sonoma County Office of Education and Petaluma City Schools.
