Contest is finished!
Hello, my name is Grover, but my friends call me Grovie. I am a 13 year old Chinese Pug. My family got me as an 8 week old little round bundle of fur. I live in Santa Rosa with my loving family, the Partridge’s. I guess that makes me part of the Partridge Family! This is my parent’s 9th year of entering in The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, and it is my 7th time participating. Every year I get a few more wrinkles and gray hairs to add to my charm. My hearing and eyesight are not as good, but my sense of smell is acute, I know when food is being prepared and I can still scamper into the kitchen! Some people say I look like a seal, Jabba the Hut or best of all an Ewok! I like dressing up for Halloween. Last year my Dad Jim and I were Beetlejuice. I still enjoy curling up on the back of the couch, chewing my Mom’s hair or sleeping all night on my Dad’s pillow snoring in his ear. When I pass gas it sounds like a trumpet. Last year I was feeling tired, found myself sleeping a lot, and drinking a ton of water. My parents took me to my vet and he discovered my blood sugar was very high and diagnosed me with diabetes! My parent’s initially freaked, but my Mom Edie is a nurse and give shots for a living. I am now on a special diet, and I get insulin shots twice a day, at 8 am and 8 pm. Now I feel stronger, drink less water, lost some weight and generally feel much better. Also this year I have developed a condition with a collapsed trachea, which affects brachycephalic breeds like Pugs. I cough, but my parents keep it under control with medicines. I hope to set an example that doggies with diabetes and respiratory issues can live good, happy, healthy lives and can participate in the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest. This year means a lot too, because we have had 4 losses in our animal household. Poppy and Taibo (kitties) Frankie and Kaiya (doggies) passed in 2015 and 2016 and Kaiya had been a participant twice in the contest over the years.
